‘In the old days, the smock-clad artists worked solely on commissions, so the faster they painted, the more money they made. “Another artist and I would race a lot,” confessed William Stout. “We might have 30 people waiting to have their portrait drawn and we’d race to see how many of the 30 we could get. Eight minutes apiece was the usual time: we could do them in three. We did about 45 each, then stood up and stretched to take a break. I looked at the portraits drying and this one was terrible: a baby’s head looked like a misshapen potato with one eye half up it’s forehead and this curved lip - and then I noticed I had signed it. I don’t even remember doing it. So I asked the cashier, ‘What did those people say when you showed it to them?’ She said all they said was ‘Oh my God…’
